Earthquake in Chengdu - May 12

A devesdating earthquake (7.9) shook Sichuan, China on May 12, the epicenter was Wenchuan which is a nearby county from Chengdu my hometown. This posting captures the conversations and thoughts from the folks around Chengdu.

Note: I live in Georgia, which is Eastern timezone (EST); Chengdu is 12 hour ahead of us. So if it's 10am here in Georgia, it's 10pm in Chengdu same day.

May 14 (Wednesday EST): I can call Chengdu now

I was able to call Chengdu today, and I had fairly long talk with my mom and sister, and captured more details:

  • By now, there were about 14,000 death total, and there were more than 500 deaths in Chengdu
  • lots of schools are out waiting for building safety inspection
  • Govenment sent lots of rescue effort
  • Lots of volunteer work.
  • Lots of blood donor, much more than usual
  • Lots of donations
By the way, my brother finally made it back to Chengdu, he was previously trapped in Xi’an when the earthquake happened.
